Lavender and Babies! 0

Lavender essential oil is generally considered one of the few safe essential oils for use with babies aged 3+ months.  Lavender essential oil should never be taken orally & it should be kept clear of the face – especially that of a baby or young child.  The real benefits of Lavender essential oil come in the form of diffusing and application to skin for burns, bites and wound healing.  It is your call as to whether you are comfortable using essential oils on your child but if you do please dilute your essential oil.  Our personal experience has shown that Lavender essential oil works well on bites however we recommend diluting the lavender essential oil into a roll-on bottle with a carrier oil such as almond oil or olive oil.  You could even use a lavender massage oil if it has been diluted sufficiently.  Always check to ensure that there are no other essential oils in the massage oil which may be harmful to children.  It is also very important to ensure that the essential oils are true 100% pure essential oil and not a synthetic fragrance oil.

Babies often enjoy the light scent of lavender.  It keeps them calm, relaxed & jolly but of course if your baby is tired and hungry then essentially nothing will calm them except food and sleep!  The strength and use of lavender should be kept light. Don't allow the lavender to overpower the room. Like any strong smell this can just end up causing a head ache and irritation. Lavender is best enjoyed in moderation allowing it to work its magic subtly.

Some people like to add Lavender essential oil to their child’s bath as they find that it relaxes both the parents and the babies and aides in the child falling calmly to sleep at bed time.  We generally do not recommend this method, however If you choose to add lavender essential oil to your child's bath please keep in mind that oil and water do not mix.  The essential oil will remain on the surface of the bath water and will likely come into direct contact with your child's skin, mouth and eyes, possibly causing irritation and discomfort.

Massaging your baby or child with a lavender massage oil is also a common use shown to calm babies and children.  Please keep in mind that a baby's skin is very delicate and the oil must be very diluted.  We would suggest starting with no more than 0.5% lavender essential oil to massage oil - caution should always be of the highest priority

Keep the oil away from your child’s head.  Usually massaging the feet and legs will do the trick.  You can also add a couple of drops to a an unscented lotion and use this for the same purpose.  Again, ensure the lotion is safe for your child.  We do not recommend using any essential oil on a child daily.  Please give your child plenty of essential oil free days.  Essential oils are extremely powerful and are of therapeutic quality.  Their strength and power must be respected.

Spray some Lavender Floral Water (lavender hydrosol) in your child's room to assist with sleeping.  Simply spray a few squirts in the corner of the room to provide a freshness for baby.

Like all things, when introducing new items into you child's life it needs to be done carefully and slowly to avoid irritation and allergic reactions.  Whilst Lavender essential oil is generally considered safe when used correctly, each child is different and therefore care must be taken.

Whenever using essential oils moderation is the important.  It is best not to overuse them.  Think safety first.

Versatility of Lavender Part 3 0

In this blog post we will discover some other usefull lavender products for skin and hair care.  Our home made Lavender Soap bar soap is made using only Urangutan Friendly certifified GreenPalm Oil, is preservative and trans free.  This makes the product both an ethically correct choice and a great choice for your skin.  The real key to gaining extra life out of your soap is to allow it to dry out a little.  Essentially the more dry the soap bar is, the longer it lasts however the off side to this is that as the soap bar airs it loses some of those beautiful essential oil aromas.  Home made soaps are great because you can usually trust that they have been made free from preservatives and unnecessary chemicals and the labelling is not confusing.

Lavender is also a great ingredient in shampoo or conditioner & studies have found lavender essential oil to be linked to hair regrowth, controlling hair loss and can assist to reduce dandruff..  Our Shampoo and Conditioner are also PEG and Sulphate Free making them less likely to cause allergy, result in itchy scalps or cause hair loss.  For any real benefit to be obtained from using natural products, we find that it is important that there are no 'nasty' ingredients added or any benefit is out weighed by the negative.  Lavender Shampoo containing Essential Lavender Oil is also great in for hair and scalps because it can hydrate, moisturize & provide necessary nourishment.

Versatility of Lavender Part 2 0

As we continue our journey through the many different uses of lavender we think you will continue to be surprised at how versatile it really is.  Did you know that Lavender is actually a herb?  We often used our dried Angustifolia Lavender flowers in gelato, milkshakes, scones and tea!

Lavender is great for joint and muscle releif.  Our Extra Strength Arthritis and Muscle Rub Cream has been specially formulated just for this purpose.  We have customers who phone or order online from all over Australia for this product.  Its popularity is spreading rapidly by word of mouth as we do no adverdising of it.  We recently had a lady walk in our front door from Toowoomba, Queensland.  She burst through the door and, with a cheeky smile, demanded "where is your arthritis cream, my daughter said I'm not allowed to go back to Toowoomba without it." Her Daughter had visited Bella Lavender a few months earlier and purchased the cream and loved it so much that she got her mum to get some more for her! This Lavender is great for people suffering arthritis or joint pain.  We have even had people claim great results with eczma.  We often find that the product provides pain relief to people who are undergoing chemotheropy.

Washing you hands and body with Lavender leaves a beautiful scent on the skin and in the room where the product lives.  Using lavender liquid soap can be great for sensitive & dry skin.  Bella Lavender Liquid Soap is the perfect hand and body soap.  It cleans to a high standard and contains our the Lavender Essential Oil fronm the Lavender grown right here at Bella Lavender Estate.  We use this Liquid soap in our cafe toilets and every day we have costomers walk over to our products and purchase this soap off the shelf because they have just tried it and loved it.  It is additive free which means that those sensitive to allergies find that the product is great for them.  Other Benefits of a lavender liquid soap are the calming effects on the might and body.

In our next installment we will discover the benefits of other types of soap, shampoo and conditioners

Versatility of Lavender Part 1 0

In this series we will cover the versatility of Lavender in and its effects on calming and soothing the body.  The beauty of this wonderful plant is that it is both aesthetically pleasing as well as being incredibly useful medicinally, culinary and in the home.  Forever and a day, lavender has been used for such reasons, even the Romans have recordings of the value of Lavender.

Lavender essential oil is often referred to as the most versatile of essential oils as it serves many different purposes such as fragrance for perfume, medicinal uses (we find it is great for mosquito bites and burns) & as a relaxant which serves the nervous system or even as a refreshing pick me up.  Lavender can also be used around the house.  We use our lavender water in our iron for ironing and it gives our clothes the most pleasant fragrance & we use our culinary lavender in scones & gelato!

Lavender is also versatile in that it can be used both fresh, dry or as an essential oil.

Below I will list some of our products and how you can use them every day to help in your day to day life.

Our Lavender Floral Water can be used in your iron for ironing.  It provides your clothes with a fresh, gentle & relaxing fragrance.  It can also be used in a spray bottle to spray a room or area around the house.

Bella Lavender Essential Lavender Oil is extremely versatile.  We have often used this to treat minor surface burns by placing one or two drops over the affected area.  Our experience is that the wound heals faster and the scarring is reduced or non-existent.  It can also be used against mosquito or other bug bites to remove the itchy feeling and relax the skin back to its original state.  Lavender is said to have anti-viral, anti-septic & anti-inflammatory properties and was used in early western medicine for such purposes.  burning Lavender oil in an incense burner or inhaling one or two drops when placed on your skin can also be very relaxing.

Lavender Massage Oil is brilliant for relieving tension, headaches and sore muscles when massaged into the skin.

In the next installment we will talk more about how lavender can be used medicinally & as a fragrance.
